Alaska's commercial salmon harvest continues to lag far behind 2025 levels

Total cumulative harvest through week 5 reaches just 24% of the annual projection, impacted by a sharp year-over-year decline across all species.

Alaska’s 2026 commercial salmon harvest through July 11 (statistical week 5) continued to lag far behind the 2025 catch, with all species declining year-over-year. The total harvest has reached 24% of the annual projection, led by sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) at 56%.

In Bristol Bay, the sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) catch is down 42% compared to 2025. Following an estimated harvest of 2.3 million sockeye salmon on July 4, harvest in the Bay remained relatively consistent throughout the week, averaging 1.36 million fish harvested per day. This pattern follows historical run timing with the harvest season peaking on July 4.

Keta salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) harvests have declined 67% year-over-year with harvest in all regions decreasing, except Chignik (+135%). Harvest volume changed most in Prince William Sound, although the decline is partially due to the unusually high harvest in 2025.

The Copper River drift gillnet fishery received its first opener in the main district since June 11. On July 9, the drift gillnet fishery opened for 24 hours, allowing for the first sockeye salmon harvests in the Copper River district since statistical week 24.
